Lockport was built as a transportation hub because of its power location along the Des Plaines River. Today, an Inter-state highway, two State Roads, two railroads, a nearby airport, as well as the canal round out the current modes of transportation accessible from Downtown.
In November of 2008 the City of Lockport gained access to I-355 when the Veterans Parkway extension connected I-55 with I-80. Lockport has two new interchanges at 159th Street (also known as Route 7) and Archer Avenue (also known as Route 171).
Lockport is served by two Pace bus routes that provide connections to neighboring communities. Both the 832 and 834 routes can be accessed at 9th and State where riders can take advantage of free local transfers. Passengers may board and exit the bus anywhere along a route where it is safe to do so. Many safe boarding locations are identified with Pace bus stop signs.

The Canadian National and the Burlington Northern run freight lines and have spurs to some of the businesses.
Just 3 miles from Downtown Lockport is Lewis University. Lewis has an airport capable of landing small commuter jets. The airport is owned by the Joliet Regional Port District and since 1989 has invested over $30 million dollars in the facility in to meet the needs of corporate aircraft.

The Sanitary and Shipping Canal runs along the west side of Downtown Lockport. Lock #1 is located just south of Division Street.
